By 2016, only 3% of young adults said they'd consider a career in the construction trades. Nine years later that figure had doubled, but only to 6%. Six.

3. The math caught up to us.

Mike Rowe says it shortest: for every five tradesmen who retire, two come in. Every shop, every plumber, every roofer, every electrician, running short. Especially commercial roofing, where the average technician is over fifty.

Roofing Is Building Mechanics.

Once you find an honest mechanic, you stay with them for life. Same goes for a roofer.

And the signs are the same.

βΒ They explain things in plain language. No jargon, no scare tactics, no "sign today."

βΒ They show you the problem. Photos of the rotted decking. Photos of the rusted fasteners. Photos of the seam that gave up.

βΒ They give a line-item proposal. Step by step, in order. Not a lump sum on a napkin.

βΒ They take a reasonable deposit. Industry-standard is 10β25%. If somebody wants 50 to 70% upfront, they're booking the trip, not the work.

βΒ They take the call when something goes sideways. Because something will. The honest ones answer. The other ones go dark.

One auto-trade veteran named Pete Rudloff put the diagnostic this way: "If you regularly find that you must take your car back for a 'refix,' you have not found the right mechanic."

The roofing version? Same roof leak, fixed three times, still leaking. That's not a roof problem. That's a roofer problem.

On certifications and stickers.

Roofers don't have walls. Roofers have trucks. And some of those trucks are covered in six different stickers and certificates.

Most of those stickers mean somebody went to a factory for a one-day class. Congratulations on showing up to class for one day.

Stickers don't fix leaks. Crews fix leaks. Chemistry fixes leaks. Communication fixes leaks. Stickers just sit there.

"I Only Use Companies That Have Been Around 85 Years."

We've heard that one. More than once.

Look, we get it. If a company has been around since the Eisenhower administration, the bad ones folded a long time ago. Age is a survival proxy. It tells you somebody was good enough to keep the lights on.

But age is a lagging indicator. It tells you who survived the last 50 years. It doesn't tell you who's going to do right by you next Tuesday.

Four Questions To Ask Any Roofer

Steal these. Use them on us. Use them on the next guy.

βΒ "Will you show me the decking before you cover it?" Decking is the foundation everything else sits on. Corrugated metal, concrete, wood sheets β whatever's holding your roof up. If sections are rotted, they need replaced, not painted over. An honest roofer will photograph it, show you, and tell you what has to be cut out. A dishonest one will just keep going.

βΒ "What's your deposit, and what's it for?" 10β25% is normal. 50 to 70% is a flag. The deposit is for materials. It is not for the roofer's vacation.

βΒ "Whose name is on the warranty?" Manufacturer-registered? Or contractor-only? Big difference. If the contractor folds, the manufacturer-registered warranty still works. The contractor-only one disappears with the contractor.

βΒ "Can I drive past three buildings you've done in this county?" If they say yes and hand you addresses, you found a real one. If they say "we'll send some over" and never do, you found the other kind.

Having A Roofer Doesn't Mean You Have A Relationship.

Relationships are built under pressure.

Every roof job runs into chaos. Materials run late. The weather turns. The accounting department sits on the deposit. Payroll is Friday and the warehouse needs a check by Tuesday.

Do they sing under stress? Or do they explode? Do they pick up the phone, smile through the unknown, and tell you the truth, even when the truth is "this got harder than we thought, and here's what we're going to do about it"?
